Golden Currant is a North American native shrub that prefers to grow in organically rich, fertile, medium moisture, well-drained soils in full sun to part shade, but it can tolerate a wide range of soils including dry to seasonally flooded, poor soils, clay soils, and drought conditions. The leaves are a light, leathery, glossy green. The black edible fruit follows in July to August and are consumed by songbirds, chipmunks, ground squirrels and other animals. The fruit can be eaten raw or made into juices, jams, jellies, tarts or pies.
