Aphelandra squarrosa - Zebra Plant
Aphelandra squarrosa
Zebra Plant's large, pointed leaves are a deep, glossy green with bright silvery veins that create a striped appearance. When the plant flowers, usually in the late summer or autumn, it bears a tall golden flower bract. The flowers that emerge from the bract last only a few days but the golden bracts last for 4 to 8 weeks. It is light intensity, not day length, that triggers the flowering process.
Zebra Plant Basic Care: Moderate
- Water: Keep soil consistently moist but not soggy. Allow the top 1–2 inches of soil to dry slightly between waterings. Avoid overwatering or letting the plant dry out completely.
- Light: Prefers bright, indirect light. Too much direct sun can scorch leaves, while low light may reduce contrast and growth.
- Soil/Drainage: Use a well-draining, slightly acidic houseplant mix. Good drainage is essential to prevent root rot.
- Temperature/Humidity: Thrives in warm temperatures and high humidity. Average room temperatures are fine, but added humidity from a humidifier or pebble tray is strongly recommended.
